Soldier-Liberator - Camenca

A gilded Soviet soldier-liberator stands head bowed in memory of his comrades atop a tall red granite pedestal, helmet and machine gun in hand. On the pedestal is a five-pointed star and an inscription in gold letters: "Eternal memory to the heroes." At the foot of the monument is the Eternal Flame. Two granite walls flank the approach, each carrying a large gilt bas-relief, soldiers being seen off to war on the left, troops in combat on the right. A red star and a wreath of fresh flowers sit at the pedestal's foot above the Eternal Flame. Names of more than two thousand fallen Kamenka residents are cut into the slabs. The operation to liberate Kamenka District began on March 18, 1944, and on March 24, Kamenka was completely liberated from the Nazi invaders. In the mid-1950s, a monument to the Unknown Soldier was erected in the city park. The money for the construction was raised by enterprises and collective farms of Kamenka District. In the mid-1970s, the composition of the Memorial was supplemented with steles with narrative bas-reliefs. The Glory Memorial is the main place of memory for city residents. Every year on March 24, the day of the city's liberation, citizens lay flowers at the Glory Memorial in memory of the liberators.
