Bus Stop - Butuceni

The Butuceni bus stop follows the standard flat-roofed concrete type. Like others along this road, it has been painted over in white, erasing any earlier surface treatments, though this Soviet-era shelter may have lacked mosaic decoration. The painted Transnistrian flag on the left with 1722-2022 is evidently a recent addition and a clear pro-Russia symbol. 1722 marked the establishment of the Collegium of Little Russia, through which Peter the Great curtailed the autonomy of the Cossack Hetmanate and brought “Left-Bank” Ukraine (Eastern Ukraine) under direct Russian imperial administration. This move laid the groundwork for Russia’s later incorporation of Right-Bank Ukraine but also foreshadowed its expansionist ambitions toward Moldova and the lands east of the Dniester (today’s Transnistria). Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 300 years later, worryingly echoes this dynamic – evidently with at least some local support.
