Bus Stop - Bugeac 2

Located in Moldova’s Autonomous Republic of Gagauzia, this Bugeac bus stop features a rectangular concrete shell with a cantilevered roof and thick sidewalls. The structure is closed at the back, save for a concrete screen of round perforations to provide ventilation and light passage, while also providing an ornamental quality. It reminds me of the brise soleil found among socialist modernist buildings in the former USSR, particularly in the South Caucasus and Central Asia. The interior is defined by three large mosaic medallions arranged in diamond-shaped frames – the concrete screen taking place of what would’ve been the fourth medallion, though it’s framed in the same way as the others. Each presents a symmetrical flower with four or six rounded petals, set against a circle within an eight-pointed star. These eight-pointed solar rosettes resemble pre-Christian Dacian solar symbols, widely used in Romanian folk art and often embedded in domestic textiles and church decorations. The palette of colors focuses on black, cream, and grey, with red, blue, orange, and yellow providing accents. The sidewalls jutting towards the street are covered in mosaics, though many have fallen. The thick grout lines and muted colors make the shelter look more faded and worn.
