Mosaic - Mermaid and Merman - Rîbnița

A long panel of merfolk across the upper wall of the rooftop of the former Rybnitsa bus station. Two elongated figures in terracotta float horizontally around the centre, arms outstretched, their lower bodies tapering into curving fish tails. The female left figure carries a crown, the male right wears a round pendant. Behind them a deep blue field is filled with pale circular forms and crossed by fantastical diagonal ribbons of pink, white and blue – as if sunlight breaches the depts of the sea. The tesserae are irregular fragments, hand-cut. In 2021, the mosaic fortunately survived renovation, with polyester panels put over it to protect it – with thanks to documentation and awareness by hoshutuda (Instagram).
